David (At Rest), Lord Frederick Leighton (English, 1865)
When David Heard, by Eric Whitacre (1999)
This piece comes to us complements of Tim D. A moving reflection on David’s loss of his son based on II Samuel 18:33: ”And the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said, ‘O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!’”
“The piece encompasses a broad spectrum of grief: calm despondency, unbridled anguish, sobbing, broken phrases, silence…it’s really pretty incredible. Make sure you hear it through at least 2:05. The ‘my son, my son….’ section that starts at 1:00 is awesome - starting with a single voice in the lowest end, the choir splits into 13 voices, with every note in the natural minor scale creating a cluster chord as it builds….”

What was created must perish;
What perished, rise again!
Cease from trembling!
Prepare yourself to live!
